David Whitten – Executive Chairman & Portfolio Manager
David joined Clive at 90 West in July 2011 as equal partner and shareholder.
David has a passion for the sector. He draws on experience spanning over three decades involving hundreds of global resource project site visits and thousands of meetings with resource companies. He has direct mining industry experience and a long and distinguished track record managing the growth and performance of large mining, energy and global resource share funds in Australia and Internationally.
From 1997 to 2010, David was Head of Global Resources at Colonial First State Investments. He was responsible for Colonial’s initial move into the global resources sector and was the prime portfolio manager for numerous strongly‐performing global resource equity share funds domiciled in Australia, UK, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and The Caymen Islands. He oversaw the growth of global resource funds that grew to in excess of $6 billion within a decade.
A geologist by training, David initially worked as an exploration geologist with EZ Industries for four years in the early eighties before joining GIO as a mining analyst and then as resources portfolio manager. Prior to his appointment at Colonial First State, he worked as Director of Global Resources at Equitilink Ltd. where he managed several successful global resource investment funds with an outstanding performance track record.
Clive Landale – Managing Director and Portfolio Manager
Clive brings 25 years experience in basic materials stocks, futures and commodities. In 1998 he joined Merrill Lynch to become their Specialist Research Sales Executive for resource stocks both in Australia and Asia. After building a reputation for selecting outperforming resource stocks, Clive became Head of Merrill Lynch’s Melbourne Institutional desk with focus on Asian Sales of Australian products.
Clive is also a farmer. He and his family are pioneers of the rice industry in Australia and he continues to own a farm with his family in Deniliquin. This gives Clive rare hands‐on experience for a Portfolio Manager and provides him with essential insights into Agricultural opportunities around the world.
Clive founded 90 West Asset Management Ltd in July 2008. He has built an enviable track record in managing the 90 West Global Basic Materials Fund which has significantly outperformed the relevant indices. His excellent portfolio management skills produced strong out performance with less risk than comparable funds and indices. As a result the fund was recognised as one of the best emerging managers in 2010 by the Best annual Hedge Fund awards.
This nurtured combination of experience and contacts is an invaluable asset to the fund and will result in the continued growth and success of 90 West in the future.
Penny Victorsen – Operations Manager
Penny joined 90 West as Operations Manager in July 2011, bringing with her a wealth of experience, both locally and internationally, in senior office administration and management.
Commencing her career in office management over 8 years ago Penny has been involved in a variety senior roles within large organisations around the globe. Managing a team of administration staff from 2008 to 2011, Penny was responsible for the regional administration division of Davis Langdon, an AECOM Company. This Global company employed approximately 5,000 staff across 75 offices around the world.
Whilst managing the administration team during their merger with AECOM, Penny was responsible for overseeing the transfer of information technology systems to the administration division. During her time as a senior member of the team she held a range of roles including secretary of several committees such as the Regional Board, membership of the National Quality Committee, recruitment, mentoring and performance management of staff and creating and implementing numerous new processes and projects that have successfully streamlined company systems.
Penny worked directly with senior executives and directors and built a reputation for excellence in all areas of her role.
Penny’s role at 90 West encompasses a wide range of responsibilities including Compliance Management, Company Secretary duties and Office Management. She brings a range of management capabilities and experience with her that will enable 90 West to rapidly expand and grow the administration process of the business.
Kathy Dimitriadi – Middle Office Manager
Kathy is a specialist in middle and back office procedures and systems and joined the 90 West team in October 2012.
Prior to this, Kathy managed a team of 30 staff leading the BlackRock Investment Management middle office team as Product Operations Manager for over ten years. Throughout this time Kathy utilised her extensive technical, people, stakeholder and project management skills raising the quality of service the Product Operations team provided to an extremely high standard, enhancing the firm’s capabilities. During this period Kathy was also a key player in the global restructure of the firm streamlining business processes.
In addition to her knowledge of the technical aspects of the role Kathy has brought with her a raft of experience in project management and business analysis. Kathy’s many achievements in the investment management industry include stakeholder relationship management, successful merger management and implementation of many high profile systems and processes eliminating potential risks and ensuring smooth transitions.
Kathy is a vital member of our team managing daily middle office processes for all funds, as well as the project management and system implementation requirements for all new mandates, from initial set up phase through to final completion ensuring an efficient integration into our business.
Daniel Sullivan – Senior Analyst
Daniel joined 90 West in May 2013 as a Resource Analyst to support David and Clive into the next phase of the companies growth. Daniel has gained extensive investment experience across resource equities with three major investment firms over the last 22 years. He has very strong research analysis and portfolio management skills. This comes from a combination of mining engineering training, wide industry experience and management of many different portfolio styles across diverse firms over his career.
After trading long short equities for 3 years and building significant growth in his division, Daniel was awarded a key analytical position at Goldman Sachs in 2007. As Strategic Research & Portfolio Manager he was responsible for developing capital allocation limits and providing equity research analysis to the entire group. Prior to this he worked with Deutsch assisting with the development of their hedge funds and managing 21 sub-portfolios from Global and Asia Pacific funds.
Previously at Zurich Scudder Investments Daniel was the sole Portfolio Manager for Zurich’s $2 billion Australian equity portfolios and having earned the trust of Scudder’s two most senior global equity managers secured the investment management of the Scudder Global Gold Fund (a US mutual fund) for the Australian office. He had moved to Zurich after his initial role from university as a Resources Analyst & Portfolio Manager at AMP Investments. Daniel managed $500 million in Australian resource stocks and covered all sectors as the primary resource analyst.
Daniel was attracted to 90 West as a result of the high calibre principals and their expertise in global natural resources. He sees this asset class as an exciting sector of the market, which is undergoing fast and positive change and has the potential to provide investors with very high growth opportunities.
